| Where to begin with these drives…I ordered these with the intent of adding a bit of storage to my home server. Probably not the expected use case, but I’ve worked with plenty of hard drives and didn’t expect any serious issues.My first clue that something might be off was the large “250GB” sticker on the front of each box. The page I’d ordered from clearly listed capacity as 2TBx2, and this would be an outrageous price for 250GBx2 space. Likely just a labeling error, but either way not off to a great start. The design of the drive case itself I actually quite like. It’s lightweight, powder-coated aluminum that feels very nice in the hand. There’s a rather flimsy-looking USB Micro B connector (with 1′ cable) for power and data. There’s also a sticker on the back instructing you not to format on MacOS or use NTFS. Given that the drive is pre-formatted this shouldn’t be an issue for most users, but still an unusual restriction for a hard drive.I first connected both drives via USB 3.0 to my Windows desktop, and immediately noticed that only one 2TB drive showed up. After some plugging and unplugging, it became obvious that while both drives are detected by Windows, only one can be used at a time. Both power on when connected, so I don’t believe this is a power supply issue with my USB controller. My best guess is that these drives share a UUID which is throwing Windows off. Changing drive letter and name did not resolve this, but I was able to transfer data to and from both drives without issue. Speeds were around 50MB/s, so safe to say these are 5400RPM or there’s a bottleneck elsewhere.Next, I connected the drives to my Ubuntu server. They didn’t automatically mount, but I was able to see both drives connected at once with the lsblk command. Unfortunately, any attempt to actually mount or use them on Linux failed. Even attempting to retrieve the UUID with blkid would just hang until I closed the terminal. Safe to say these are not compatible with Linux as sold.Hoping the Linux issues stemmed from the USB controller, I cracked both drives open. Inside is a standard 2.5″ HDD plugged into a SATA to USB board. Unfortunately, not even connecting the drives directly to my server via SATA allowed them to work with Linux. I’ve also attempted reformatting and partitioning on Windows and have similarly had no luck. I will update this review if I figure something out, but I’m not optimistic.In summary: don’t buy these. The price may seem attractive, but they clearly have issues. While you may get one working at a time on Windows (or perhaps Mac, a platform I couldn’t test), I wouldn’t expect it to last. These are junk, and it’s clear the seller knows it given the limitations that are listed on the drive itself but not the product page. I’ll also note that I haven’t run any tests to verify the claimed 2TB capacity. You shouldn’t buy these either way, but I wouldn’t be surprised if their true capacity is much lower. | 1/5 |
